Sunday, July 15, 2012 - Short Ride, Campground Blues

Tribune, KS to Scott City, KS (50 miles with 2,367 total miles to date)

Another day to watch the sunrise from the saddle of the bike. Kansas gets an A++ for road quality and shoulder for cyclists. It has been the best so far. But, the terrain stays very flat, with an occasional rise and fall. The wind was up first thing in the morning coming out of the south. As the sun got higher, the wind increased and the cyclist had to ride at an angle.

The crops (corn and beans) looked much better than the few fields we saw in Colorado. There is more use of irrigation, which is probably the key. More small towns passed by on the short ride today.

As, I was the first to arrive at the Scott City destination and after an ice cream cone, scoping out the camp spot was the priority. The RV camping site we planned to visit was found to have the dreaded 50 amp outlet and not a 30 amp. That is just great, so now what? I started to visit the local motels. Linda at the Lazy R Motel was very pleasant and it looked clean, so I told her I would talk to the troops. Next I scoped out the Scott City Inn...don't think so! No answer was received when I rang the bell at the Cowboy Cabins office, so I rode behind the building. The three snarling, barking German Shepherds behind the office's fence were not too inviting, so I checked that one off the list. About that time I saw the troops coming over the hill. After briefing them on our options, they agreed to check out the Lazy R Motel. After some haggling with Linda, we were charged $5 a piece to plug in our campers, plus the price of a two bed, four person room. At least we had A/C for the day and night. As the temperature got to 98 degrees.

Just before deciding to go explore the little town, Vera discovered she lost her keys to the camper. Poor thing, she was beside herself. They have not turned up yet, but we hope they will turn up soon. A trip to the local Ace Hardware store allowed them to make a couple of the missing keys for the camper, plus I could look for the greatly needed RV plug in adapter (30/50 amp). Of course the adapter was not to be found. With the size of the towns to come and the track record of 50 amp only plug availability, tomorrow night is not looking good. I have calls in to three possible campsites in Ness, KS, but no one must answer their phones on Sunday.

We had our family devotions, ate some dinner at the only restaurant open in town, (i.e. Wendy's), and called it a day!

I kindly asked these horses if they would pose for a picture...and they did.
 An experimental windmill farm.
Another massive cattle feeder operation. It is hard to capture the size of this thing!!
A night at the Lazy R hotel.

  1. Great descriptions of the places and sights you have seen. Hope it will cool down a little for you, that has got to be a heck of a workout in the heat. I enjoyed reading about your travels and will definitely keep checking this site for updates. Good luck and stay safe. Cousin Dan
